Sailing In Dublin 4

We boarded the La Peniche barge on July 4 to sample the cuisine and slower pace of life on the Grand Canal. While we dined we enjoyed a low speed cruise along Mespil road, through the Leeson Street bridge/lock (entertaining many interested onlookers), and on as far as Portobello bridge and back. http://www.flickr.com/photos/10440996@N07/sets/72157600984908558/

Thanks to Martina for organizing.

Dun Laoghaire Regatta

Ruffin'It competed in the Ruffian one design class in the recent regatta. Unfortunately the boat had to retire with an equipment failure on Saturday. Here's a report from our onboard correspondent Chris…

On the 14th July, at 9.30 A.M.,myself, Bronagh,Richard, Ann and Bernd met at the container. Ann was the captain. We proceeded over to the DMYC where we were left out to the Ruffian on a rib. We prepared the boat in the usual way, getting the main sail and number 1 jib for hoisting. As soon as the sheets were sorted, the main sail was hoisted and we then left the mooring on motor. As soon as we reached the mouth of the harbour, the motor was turned off and the jib hoisted. The wind was good - an ideal day for sailing. We made our way towards the committee boat for the South Bull Course and were there in time.

We waited with other similar boats and commenced the race when the signal was given at 11.00 A.M. We began to race and were doing quite well. Bronagh was at the helm. Richard controlled the main sail. Myself and Bernd controlled the jib. Throughout the race we overtook two boats to finish third from the end of the first race. The crew was settling in and coordinating activities very well. As we were over the finish line, suddenly, the jib took off in the wind. It was only held to the boat by the two jib sheets. The fitting which held it to the bow of the boat had broken away from the main frame and was suspended in air with the jib. After much effort, we pulled the jib and fittings in. We kept control of the boat.

A crew member in a passing Ruffian told us to urgently attach the spinnaker halyard to the bow of the boat as an emergency forestay to prevent the mast from collapsing. This we did.  We tidied the jib as best as we could ensuring that the bow fitting was secure below deck. We abandoned the racing and headed back to the mooring. On route, we had to be careful not to interfere with other races which were ongoing at the time. We were back at the mooring at 3.30 P.M. approximately, a bit disappointed but safe.

Next Ruffian racing will be the South-East Regatta in Wicklow over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
